Precast/Prestressed Girder Help

Vertical Shear

Transverse shear reinforcement is designed using the Modified Compression Field Theory, Art. 5.8.3. The strength envelopes are used to compute the amount of shear reinforcement required.

Detailed shear calculations procedures are as specified in Art. 5.8.3.3. Minimum spacing and reinforcement limits are as specified in Articles 5.8.2.7and 5.8.3.3 , respectively. Beta Theta values can either be computed using the equations 5.8.3.4.2-1 and 5.8.3.4.2-3 or by using the Table B5.2-1 in Appendix B5.

For sections in the negative moment zone, de is calculated considering the non-prestressed reinforcement in the slab as the main reinforcement and neglecting the prestress reinforcement.

Anchorage zone reinforcement is calculated based on the provisions of LRFD Art. 5.10.10.1.

An optional new method "Simplified Shear" following AASHTO guidelines as specified in Art. 5.8.3.4.3 is also available. This method is similar to the AASHTO Standard Specifications shear methodology (Vci/Vcw).

Note: Precast/Prestressed Girder assumes that the section always contains at least the minimum transfer reinforcement as specified in Article 5.8.2.5.
